Concord Zoners Deny Variance for Wireless Internet Service

Our plans to provide high speed wireless internet access in the town of Concord, Vermont and surrounding areas have been hampered once again.  The Concord Zoning Board decided to reject the variance needed to erect a structure higher than 35 feet. The 100’ high by one foot wide lattice tower we requested is the same type used by many Ham operators and is required to get above the surrounding trees.  At our proposed location, a private landowner's property, it would not even have extended above the top of the ridgeline.

According to the board, plans submitted to the town by the property owner and The Kingdom Connection were not sufficient to give a go-ahead with the project because they didn't include specific details of the small solar panels and wind energy hardware to be used.  The Concord Select Board claimed that their zoning bylaws, adopted in 1994, do not allow any communications facilities in the town.  This was their position despite the fact that previous zoning boards had permitted much larger and more visible cell phone towers that have never been built
 
We were disappointed in the original decision of the town to turn down the $50,000 state grant for internet access and decided to go ahead with the plans on our own. But, the elected representatives of the town have blocked us in every way.
 
The town suggested that the plans be resubmitted once a telecommunications ordinance had been drafted and adopted by the town, which Planning Board Chairman David Lunnie adds, will take at least six more months.
 
We know there are an overwhelming number of customers in Concord that want high speed service and we are working to bring that to them, but we must follow proper channels to do so.
